New Delhi- As violence in Manipur escalates, Licypriya Kangujam, one of the world’s youngest climate activists, has turned her sharp critique toward the country’s leadership, condemning the Central Government’s response to the ongoing conflict.
In a recent powerful video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Licypriya lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his apparent indifference to the crisis in Manipur. Her words, blunt and unyielding, reflect the growing frustration among citizens in the state who feel abandoned by their leaders.
" You’re the most disgusting leader in history who failed to protect your own person, who can’t bring peace in the yearlong conflict of Manipur but who tries to bring peace in Ukraine. You take Ukraine War more seriously than the war in your own state of India for last 16 months in Manipur" the young girl writes fearlessly.
Licypriya’s critiques extend beyond individual leaders, focusing on the urgent need for peace in Manipur. She has continually called on the Central Government to act decisively to end the violence, which has claimed the lives of many, including a young mother killed in front of her daughter and an elderly man murdered while sleeping. The activist has accused the government of fostering division between the two communities with a hidden agenda to destabilize the region.
“How long are you going to play with the lives of Manipuri people?” she asked, demanding immediate action to restore peace. Her statements reflect a broader outcry for justice and reconciliation in a region that has seen little respite from the turmoil.
In her video message and a series of posts, Licypriya accuses PM Modi of focusing on foreign tours and election campaigns while Manipur suffers daily rocket, missile, and drone strikes. Over 300 people have been killed, and more than 70,000 displaced, including 30,000 children, who have been forced to live in relief camps for over 16 months since the violence began. Yet, as Licypriya pointed out, the Prime Minister has not visited Manipur, further fueling the perception of governmental neglect.
" You even allow to open embassy like office for Kuki terrorists organization in New Delhi with their Kukiland Zomi Flag like ITLF, Kuki Inn, COTU, KSO, etc. who are involves in recent drones and missiles strikes in Imphal. This bias attitude of you clearly shows that Central Government create this crisis with some hidden agenda between the two communities to bring instability in the region. You are responsible for today’s bloodshed in Manipur" she laments.
“You are busy playing dhol and touring foreign nations while Manipur is bleeding. Your ignorance towards the people of Manipur is pathetic,” Licypriya remarks in another post. She criticized Modi for treating Manipur as if it were a foreign territory rather than an integral part of India, a sentiment echoed by many who feel sidelined by the central administration.
In one of her most scathing posts, Licypriya called Modi “the most disgusting leader in history,” accusing him of failing to protect his people.
Licypriya’s criticism wasn’t confined to PM Modi. In another hard-hitting post, she accused the Governor of Manipur of abandoning the state in its time of need. "Manipur Governor is planning to run away from Imphal, Manipur to Guwahati at 9:15 am via Indigo flight instead of consolidating both sides to restore peace," she wrote. Licypriya described the governor’s behavior as spineless, stating, “Manipur deserves to be free from all such spineless people.”
This accusation came at a time when the Manipur government has been heavily criticized for its failure to broker peace between the two warring communities. The perception of officials abandoning their duties has only heightened the anger and frustration in the state.
Adding to her appeals, Licypriya addressed Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, requesting urgent access to the Starlink satellite internet service in Manipur. Her plea came after the government imposed yet another internet ban in the state, a move widely seen as an attempt to suppress the voices of citizens and control the flow of information. "We need urgent Starlink service in Manipur as internet is being banned from today onwards by the current regime to silence the voice of the people. We need free speech in India too," she tweeted in a sarcastic way.
The recurring internet shutdowns have further exacerbated the situation in Manipur, cutting off communication between people and limiting their ability to report on the violence and atrocities being committed.
Licypriya, who hails from the Meitei community, expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. Despite the heartbreaking attacks on her own community, she emphasizes that violence is not the answer.
In one of her posts, she stated, "Killing each other is not the solution," while acknowledging that this is the first news she has heard from the Kuki side of an ex soldier been killed on the Meitei turf. She also highlighted that over 30 Meiteis, including schoolgirls and children, have lost their lives after accidentally crossing the buffer zone, a division she attributes to Prime Minister Modi's actions, aimed at separating communities within India.
Licypriya has been championing her cause since six years old to protect, preserve and nurture the environment by fighting the climate change. She is one of the youngest climate activists globally and addressed the world leaders in the United Nations Climate Conference 2019 (COP25) in Madrid, Spain calling the world leaders to take immediate climate actions to save the planet and their future. She attended the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly 2022. She is an outspoken young leader inspiring millions of people around the World and one of the leading voices for climate change globally.
She is also known for her “Child Movement” campaign, which aims to empower children to take action against climate change and inspire others to join the movement.
She transformed the iconic Taj Mahal into a plastic pollution free monument in June 2022. Delhi University makes it compulsory to plant a minimum of one tree every year by each student to pass their final examination which is her long pending demand to the Government. From zero to thousands of schools in India have now studied climate education in their schools after her request.
On 15th October 2020, Licypriya spent a week at night protesting alone in front of the President House of India against the Delhi air pollution crisis.
