Bhopal- On January 23, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav inaugurated the GG Flyover (stretching from Gayatri Mandir to Ganesh Mandir) in the capital city of Bhopal. During the event, he announced that the flyover would be renamed after the architect of the Indian Constitution, Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. However, even a month after the announcement, the administration had not taken any concrete steps in this regard. No nameplates were installed on the flyover, and the name was not updated in official documents.
The administration's inaction despite the Chief Minister's announcement raised several questions. No government orders were issued regarding the renaming, indicating that the administrative machinery was not taking the CM's announcements seriously. Typically, renaming a public place requires the Urban Development Department and the Municipal Corporation to pass a proposal and issue a gazette notification. However, this process had not even been initiated.
When The Mooknayak investigated the renaming process by checking Google Maps, the flyover was still listed as 'GG Flyover.' This made it clear that the administration had not taken any steps to implement the CM's announcement.
Updating the name on digital platforms like Google Maps requires the local administration to send an official notification, but no such initiative had been taken.
After The Mooknayak-Hindi published a report on February 22 highlighting the delay and administrative negligence, the administration finally sprang into action. Late at night, large signboards declaring "Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Bridge" were installed on the flyover, and a nameplate was placed at the entrance gate. Following this, Google Maps was also updated to reflect the new name.
Earlier, Pradeep Ahirwar, former member of the SC Commission and State President of the Scheduled Caste Congress, had criticized the administration's inaction.
He had warned that if the name was not changed, protests would follow. After the formalities of renaming were completed, Ahirwar praised The Mooknayak for its role in pushing the administration to act. He stated that if the report had not been published, the administration would have continued to neglect the matter. He expressed hope that the government would now take its decisions more seriously.
Ahirwar pointed out that it was unfortunate that despite the Chief Minister's announcement, the administration had not acted promptly. It was only after pressure mounted from the media and social media that officials took the necessary steps.
The swift action taken by the administration after The Mooknayak's report highlights the power of media in holding authorities accountable. The renaming of the flyover to "Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Bridge" not only fulfills the Chief Minister's promise but also honors the legacy of one of India's greatest leaders. However, the delay in implementing the announcement raises questions about the efficiency and seriousness of the administrative machinery in executing government decisions.
