Jaipur- Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took a jibe at the BJP government for its failure to curb rising crime against women in the state. In a scathing post, Gehlot highlighted the increasing number of crimes against women in the first six months of the BJP government.
Gehlot criticized the BJP government for its hypocrisy on women's safety. He recalled the BJP's "Nahin Sahenge Rajasthan" campaign, which targeted the previous Congress government in Rajasthan for alleged lapses in women's security.
Interestingly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had even drawn an unflattering comparison between Rajasthan and Manipur, implying that Rajasthan was lagging behind in terms of women's safety. However, the latest crime statistics have exposed the BJP's claims as hollow, revealing a sharp rise in crimes against women in Rajasthan since the party came to power.
According to Indian Express, the crime statistics for the first six months of 2024 are alarming:
10.28% increase in kidnapping of women
8.03% increase in rape cases
7.19% increase in gang-rape cases
10.16% increase in gang-rape cases involving minors
2,758 rape cases and 794 minor rape cases registered till June
3,552 rape cases registered in six months, averaging 19 cases daily
51.79% of these cases are still under investigation
CM Gehlot questioned the BJP government's inaction in curbing these crimes. "Rajasthan is asking, how long will it tolerate this misgovernance and violence against women?" He highlighted the measures taken by his previous government to prevent crimes against women, including:
Special Investigation Unit (SIU) and Additional SP deployment in each district
Nirbhaya Squad
Women's Desk in police stations
Special Helpline Number
Mandatory FIR registration
FIR facility at SP offices
Gehlot demanded to know what measures the current BJP government has taken to prevent crimes against women.
