Ashoka University Professor Ali Khan Granted Interim Bail by Supreme Court

New Delhi- Dr. Ali Khan Mahmudabad, an assistant professor at Ashoka University in Sonipat, Haryana, has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in a case involving alleged objectionable remarks about 'Operation Sindoor' and Indian Army officers Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotishwar Singh granted the interim bail after senior advocate Kapil Sibal argued on behalf of Khan.

During the hearing, Justice Surya Kant remarked, "Every person has the right to express their views, but was there a need to make such communal remarks at this time?"

He further questioned, "The country was going through a difficult phase. Our citizens were under attack. Why make such statements at such a time? Was this an attempt to gain popularity? Was this the right moment for such remarks?"

The Supreme Court observed, "We are sure you are highly educated, but you could have expressed your views in a simpler, more respectful manner without hurting others."

Haryana government’s counsel, ASG SV Raju, argued that Khan should have approached the High Court first instead of directly moving the Supreme Court.

Kapil Sibal countered, stating that Khan’s wife is pregnant and that he had already been sent to jail.

Along with granting interim bail, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Haryana government and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three IPS officers to probe the matter.

The court also directed Khan:

• Not to post any further controversial content on social media.

• To surrender his passport before the Sonipat court.
