NHRC Takes Suo Motu Action on Boy's Death in Delhi Drain Incident

New Delhi- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the tragic death of a five-year-old boy who fell into an open drain in Delhi's Alipur area on 7th October.

This incident, the fifth of its kind in recent months, highlights ongoing negligence by civic authorities. The NHRC expressed concern over such repeated incidents in the national capital, noting that they point to severe lapses in ensuring public safety.

The Commission has issued notices to several top officials, including the Delhi Chief Secretary, Police Commissioner, Vice-Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and the Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. These officials have been directed to submit detailed reports within four weeks, addressing the status of FIRs related to such incidents, actions taken against responsible parties, and compensation provided to the victims' families.

The NHRC has called for authorities to outline measures aimed at preventing similar accidents in the future. The Commission’s intervention follows multiple fatalities due to open drains in Delhi, including recent incidents involving children and adults across various areas of the city.
