Imphal- Mobile internet services will remain suspended for two more days in nine districts of Manipur due to ongoing ethnic violence, authorities announced. The suspension, initially imposed on November 18, will now last until 5:15 p.m. on December 5.
The decision, according to a Home Department official, is a precautionary measure to prevent further unrest and the spread of misinformation through social media. The official stated that no major incidents have been reported since November 18, aside from one person missing from Kangpokpi district since November 25th.
Commissioner, Home, N. Ashok Kumar, issued the order citing concerns that "anti-social elements might use social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting the passions of the public." In view of the prevailing law and order situation in the state, it was apprehended that anti-social elements might use social media extensively to transmit images, hate speech, and hate video messages that could incite the public and have serious repercussions for the law and order situation.
The nine districts affected by the suspension are Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl.
The suspension follows widespread violence and attacks on government officials' residences in early November, sparked by the recovery of bodies of three children and three women in Jiribam district. Classes resumed on November 29 after a two-week closure in schools and universities across six districts. Curfews were relaxed in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Jiribam. However, any gathering or rally requires prior approval from the competent authorities.
