Kerala: Police File Cases Against 1,425 Keralites Including 700 Nurses

Kochi- Police in Kerala have registered 10 FIRs against approximately 1,425 Keralites, including 700 nurses, who left Kuwait after defaulting on bank loans totaling Rs 700 crore. The decision to file the cases follows a visit by Kuwaiti officials to Kerala, where they met with top police officials to discuss the issue.

The individuals are accused of leaving Kuwait without repaying loans ranging from Rs 50 lakh to over Rs 1 crore, obtained from the Gulf Bank of Kuwait. The loans were granted by the bank's Consumer Credit department, located in Al-Qibla, Mubarak-Al Kabeer Street, Safat, Kuwait.

The scam came to light in 2022 when the bank discovered defaults in loan repayments. Upon investigation, it was revealed that many of the borrowers had left Kuwait for countries such as the US, the UK, Canada, and India.

The FIRs have been registered in the districts of Kottayam and Ernakulam, with one case filed at the Kumarakom police station in Kottayam. The complainant in the case is a Kuwaiti national, Muhammad Abdul Vassey Kamran.

An Inspector General of Police is leading the investigation into the case. Kuwait has a large number of people from Kerala, including a significant population of nurses.
