Karnataka Mourns Loss of 4 School Girls in Sea Tragedy

Karwar, Karnataka: Four teenage girls drowned in the sea at Murudeshwar beach on Tuesday evening while on an educational trip, according to authorities. The incident has sparked allegations of negligence against the teachers and the tourism department.

The girls, identified as 15-year-old Deeksha, Lavanya, Vandana, and Shravanthi, were students of Morarji Desai Residential School in Kottur village near Mulbagal town in Kolar district. The academic tour included 57 people, among them teachers.

According to reports, the girls were swept away by strong currents while playing on the beach. Authorities managed to rescue four girls initially, but Shravanthi, who was rescued immediately, later succumbed to her injuries. Deeksha, Lavanya, and Vandana were found dead Wednesday morning.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for each deceased girl's family. "I was shocked to learn the news of the students...who drowned in the sea near Murudeshwar during an educational trip," Siddaramaiah stated. He further instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district to ensure the safe transportation of the bodies to their hometowns.

The Chief Minister also emphasized the need for increased caution by teachers during such trips, stating, "Teachers must exercise greater caution while supervising children during trips. When visiting dangerous locations, special care should be taken to monitor the children."

Search operations are ongoing to locate any remaining students.
