Justice Sanjiv Khanna to Take Over as CJI on November 11

New Delhi : Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday, November 11. President Droupadi Murmu will administer the oath.

Justice Khanna, who has been serving as a Supreme Court judge, will have a tenure of approximately six months. He was recommended as the successor by the current CJI, D.Y. Chandrachud, last month, and his appointment was officially cleared by the Centre on October 24. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification stating that “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 11 November 2024.”

Justice Khanna has been part of several significant Supreme Court judgments, including those related to Article 370, the decriminalisation of adultery, the electoral bonds scheme, and the EVM-VVPAT tally.
