Bijapur- In a horrifying escalation of Naxalite violence, two women were brutally murdered within 24 hours in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh. The latest incident happened on Saturday when a 40-year-old woman named Yalam Sukra was killed by Naxalites in Lade village under the Madded police station limits of Bijapur district.
Police suspect that Sukra was targeted over allegations of being a police informant. This marks the latest incident in a series of Naxalite-related killings in Bastar, which comprises seven districts, including Bijapur. Officials noted that Naxalite violence has claimed more than 60 lives in the region this year, highlighting the persistent challenge of curbing such activities and ensuring public safety.
The murder of Sukra follows closely on the heels of other violent incidents in Bijapur. On December 6, an Anganwadi worker, was brutally killed in the Basaguda area, also on suspicions of being a police informant.
On the night of December 6, a group of Naxalites stormed into Timmapur village in the Basaguda area and dragged 45-year-old Anganwadi worker Lakshmi out of her home. Despite her son's desperate attempts to save her, the attackers killed her by slitting her throat with sharp weapons.
Police revealed that Lakshmi, whose husband had already passed away, had received threats from the Naxalites on two occasions prior to this attack. The incident has shocked the community, and the police have initiated an investigation while sending the body for postmortem.
Within hours of Lakshmi’s murder, Naxalites abducted another woman, Yalam Sukra, and her husband from Lade village in the Madded police station area. The assailants accused Sukra of being a police informant for the Telangana police since 2017. Sukra was taken to a nearby hill and strangled to death, while her husband, Ramaiya Yalam, was mercilessly beaten with sticks and later released.
The Naxalites left a pamphlet at the crime scene justifying the killing on grounds of alleged informant activities. Sukra’s body was recovered by police the following morning, and a case has been registered.
These killings are part of a larger surge in Naxalite violence in Bijapur and the Bastar division, which includes seven districts. Over the past three days, Naxalites have also murdered two former sarpanches, Suklu Farsa and Sukhram Avlam, in separate attacks.
So far this year, more than 60 people have been killed in Bastar due to Naxalite violence. The incidents highlight the precarious situation faced by civilians, particularly those accused of being police informants.
Additional Superintendent of Police Chandrakant Gavarna confirmed the incidents and stated that operations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. The spate of brutal killings has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in the region. Locals, caught between Naxalite threats and law enforcement pressures, remain vulnerable. Security forces continue anti-Naxalite operations, but the need for enhanced measures to ensure civilian safety is becoming increasingly evident.
