Mount Abu/Rajasthan – In an extraordinary display of determination and ingenuity, the remote village of Utraj, located 8 kilometers beyond Guru Shikhar, the highest peak of Mount Abu in Rajasthan, has received its first-ever tractor.
Situated at an altitude exceeding 5,500 feet above sea level, Utraj is not only home to Rajasthan's highest polling station but also a community of farmers who have long grappled with the challenges of cultivating barren lands without mechanized tools. The delivery of a tractor to this isolated village, made possible by Mahindra & Mahindra, marks a historic milestone, transforming the agricultural landscape and igniting hope among its residents.
Delivering a tractor to Utraj was a logistical feat that seemed nearly impossible. The village’s location, nestled deep in the Aravali ranges, is accessible only through a treacherous 8-kilometer uphill journey from Guru Shikhar. The path is riddled with rocky, uneven terrain and steep inclines, making it impassable for conventional vehicles. For years, this unforgiving landscape prevented the introduction of modern farming equipment, leaving Utraj’s farmers to rely on manual labor and traditional tools, which limited their productivity and left much of the land uncultivated.
The absence of mechanized farming had taken a toll on the village’s economy, where agriculture is the primary—and often only—source of livelihood. The arrival of a tractor was a long-cherished dream for Utraj’s farmers, but the sheer difficulty of navigating the rugged terrain had made it seem unattainable. Mahindra & Mahindra, however, accepted the challenge, devising a plan to overcome the odds and bring prosperity to this high-altitude community.
Transporting a fully assembled tractor to Utraj was out of the question due to the narrow, rocky paths and steep gradients. Mahindra’s team devised an innovative solution: disassemble the tractor into its individual components and transport them piece by piece to the village. This approach required meticulous planning and extraordinary effort. The tractor’s parts were carefully packaged and carried—often on the shoulders of workers—across the 8-kilometer climb, navigating the perilous, stone-strewn trail with unwavering resolve.
The journey was grueling. Workers faced the physical strain of carrying heavy components up steep slopes, contending with uneven footing and the constant risk of loose rocks. Despite these challenges, the team persevered, driven by the knowledge that their efforts would transform the lives of Utraj’s farmers. Once the parts reached the village, Mahindra’s skilled employees set to work, reassembling the tractor on-site with precision and expertise. The successful installation of the tractor in Utraj was a moment of triumph, not only for the company but for the entire village.
A post on X by user @HeManShoeSony on April 27, 2025, captured the magnitude of this achievement, noting that the tractor was “disassembled and taken to the highest village of the Aravali ranges located at 5000 feet” and reassembled on-site, sparking widespread celebration among villagers.
For the people of Utraj, the tractor represents far more than a piece of machinery—it is a lifeline to a brighter future. With no other significant sources of employment, farming is the backbone of the village’s economy. However, the lack of mechanized tools had rendered much of the land barren, as manual cultivation was labor-intensive and inefficient. The tractor’s arrival has changed this reality, empowering farmers to cultivate larger areas of land with greater ease and efficiency.
Dalpat Singh Dahiya, President of the 16-village Rajput Samaj, expressed the community’s gratitude and optimism: “The highest peak of the Aravali, Guru Shikhar, stands at 5,500 feet above sea level, and 8 kilometers beyond lies Utraj, where our farmers live. For years, they couldn’t farm properly, and the land was turning barren. This tractor’s arrival brings joy not just to our farmers but to others in the region who can now farm again. Today, organic farming is the need of the hour, and our farmers will focus on chemical-free, organic cultivation.”
The tractor’s introduction is expected to revolutionize farming practices in Utraj, enabling farmers to till their fields more effectively and adopt sustainable, organic methods to meet the growing demand for chemical-free produce. This shift not only promises economic benefits but also positions Utraj as a potential model for high-altitude, eco-friendly agriculture.
Amit Jain of MP Motors, Abu Road, shared insights into the monumental effort: “Delivering a tractor to Utraj was no easy feat. Seeing the villagers’ demand, we didn’t lose courage. We transported the tractor’s parts to the village and succeeded in assembling it. We hope to continue supporting Utraj’s farmers in similar ways.”
