Morena- Hundreds of farmers in Morena district, protested on Tuesday against the proposed auction of land belonging to a defunct sugar mill. The farmers drove their tractors to the sugar mill premises, staging a demonstration dubbed 'Jail Bharo Aandolan'. The protest was supported by the Congress party, with tractors bearing party flags seen throughout the demonstration.
The Morena sugar factory, also known as the Kailaras sugar mill, was established in 1973 but ceased operations in 2010-2011 due to financial losses attributed to a shortage of sugarcane and working capital. The state government later developed a revival plan, which includes the sale of approximately 27 hectares of land to settle debts owed to farmers and workers. The Department of Industry has been tasked with overseeing the bidding and sale process.
Protesters argue against the auction, demanding the mill's revival. Congress MLA from Joura Assembly seat, Pankaj Upadhyay, addressed the media, stating that the auction process has been temporarily suspended due to the protest. Upadhyay assured that the Morena district administration has committed to reviving and reopening the sugar mill, with the auction process to be rescheduled at a later date.
To ensure law and order, Morena District Police set up barricades to stop protesters from entering the mill's area, leading to heated arguments between protesters and police personnel.
