No Earthquake in Wayanad: MoES

Wayanad- As per a report by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), no natural earthquake has been recorded in Wayanad and its adjoining areas. This comes after a news report by various media outlets reported a loud tremor in the area.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences says that the tremor reported by media sources may be due to the shifting of unstable rock masses accumulated during landslides from one level to the other. This has resulted in better stabilisation of the ground which has generated sub-terranean acoustic vibration due to the release of frictional energy.

This energy has the potential to reach up to hundreds of kilometres through sub-surface cracks and fractures associated with sub-surface lineaments. According to the experts, this acoustic sub-terranean vibration can cause rumbling sound and ground vibration in the landslide-prone areas.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences has requested people not to panic due to this acoustic sub-terranean vibration. It has also clarified that no earthquake has been recorded in the area.
