Telugu Becomes Mandatory Subject in All Telangana Schools

Hyderabad - The Telangana government has announced that Telugu will be a mandatory subject for students from classes 1 through 10 in all schools across the state, including those affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other educational boards. This requirement will take effect from the upcoming academic year 2025-26.

While the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act was originally enacted on March 30, 2018, its full implementation was delayed by the previous administration. The current government, led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, has now decided to enforce the legislation completely.

Officials recently held discussions with representatives from various educational boards to communicate the new requirement for 9th and 10th grade students starting in the coming academic year.

To ease the transition, particularly for students whose first language is not Telugu or who have relocated from other states, the government has approved the use of a simplified Telugu textbook called "Vennela" instead of the more complex "Singidi" textbook. This change aligns with the CBSE subject list (Language Group-L) under code 089.

According to the implementation timeline, 9th grade students will begin using the simplified textbook in the 2025-26 academic year, while 10th grade students will start in 2026-27.

School Education Secretary Yogita Rana issued the formal order approving this substitution on Tuesday.
