Hyderabad- In a significant move to honor India’s iconic social reformers, the All India OBC Students Association (AIOBCSA) has formally requested the Vice-Chancellor of the university to rename gold medals awarded to students from marginalized communities after Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The association proposed renaming the OBC Gold Medal as the “Phule Gold Medal” and the SC/ST Gold Medal as the “Ambedkar Gold Medal” to recognize the transformative contributions of these leaders in education and social justice.

AIOBCSA’s University Convener, Bomma Praveen, highlighted the monumental roles of Phule and Ambedkar in advancing equality and empowerment. “Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was a trailblazer who championed education for the oppressed, particularly women and backward classes. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, dedicated his life to securing rights for Dalits, Adivasis, and other marginalized groups,” Praveen stated during the announcement.

The association emphasized that renaming the medals would serve as a powerful tribute to the enduring legacy of these visionaries while inspiring students from marginalized backgrounds. It would also underscore the university’s commitment to the principles of equality, justice, and inclusive education championed by Phule and Ambedkar.

AIOBCSA expressed optimism that the Vice-Chancellor would approve this socially significant proposal. The renaming is seen as a symbolic yet impactful step toward celebrating the contributions of Phule and Ambedkar to India’s democratic and educational framework.
