Bhopal- In a major administrative crackdown, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken decisive action against IAS officer and Adivasi Jan Kalyan Samaj (AJKS) President Santosh Kumar Verma, who has been embroiled in multiple controversies. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has instructed the forwarding of a proposal to the Central Government to terminate his IAS service. Alongside this, Verma has been removed from the Agriculture Department and attached to the General Administration Department (GAD) pool, where he will receive no departmental assignment or responsibilities. The government is set to serve him a charge sheet imminently.
This decision emerged from a high-level meeting held late at night at the Chief Minister's residence. Sources indicate that mounting public opposition, pressure on law and order, and the severity of long-pending cases against Verma compelled the government to adopt this stringent measure.
The GAD report has substantiated the serious charges against Verma, providing the foundation for the government's resolution. According to the report, the allegations leveled against IAS Santosh Verma are deemed highly grave. It states that Verma allegedly resorted to forged and fabricated orders to secure his promotion to the IAS cadre. Additionally, several criminal cases against him remain pending in various courts, casting doubts on his administrative integrity.
Furthermore, his Integrity Certificate was purportedly obtained using falsified documents, constituting a direct violation of service rules. The departmental inquiry has reached its final stage, with Verma's responses deemed unsatisfactory. On these grounds, the government argues that retaining Verma in the IAS service undermines administrative discipline and transparency.
The administration maintains that keeping such an officer in service poses a risk to discipline, administrative transparency, and law enforcement. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has firmly stated that the government will tolerate "no leniency whatsoever" in this matter.
The controversy ignited recently due to two statements by IAS Santosh Verma, which triggered sharp backlash across Madhya Pradesh. Not only the Brahmin community but also other groups reacted vehemently, leading to protests, effigy burnings, and demands for strict action in multiple districts.
1. During an AJKS conference, Verma remarked, "Reservation should continue until my son receives a Brahmin daughter in marriage." This comment was widely condemned as offensive and inflammatory, exacerbating tensions between communities.
2. In a widely circulated video, he claimed, "The High Court is not allowing ST category children to become civil judges... Cutoffs are deliberately set low." This direct accusation against the judiciary was viewed as gravely inappropriate, further fueling public ire.
These statements acted as fuel to the fire, intensifying the hostile atmosphere against Santosh Verma.
The Brahmin community's announcement of a siege at the Chief Minister's residence on December 14 escalated political and social unrest across the state. Leaders from Congress, BJP, and other parties also vowed to join the protests, broadening the movement's scope. Effigy burnings, sit-ins, and demonstrations persisted statewide, with public anger mounting daily due to the lack of action.
Anticipating thousands converging on Bhopal, which could strain law and order, the government convened an emergency late-night meeting. This prompted the tough decision to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control and avert potential clashes.
With the dismissal proposal now en route to the Central Government, the final verdict rests there. Meanwhile, the state government plans to expedite the process by issuing the charge sheet from the departmental inquiry soon. Attached to the GAD pool, Santosh Verma will be left without any department or administrative duties, effectively rendering him fully non-functional.
