New Delhi– As Dalit History Month shines a spotlight on the achievements of the Dalit community, Cardinal Anthony Poola stands out as a trailblazer.
In August 2022, Pope Francis appointed two Indian bishops to the College of Cardinals: Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrão of Goa and Daman, and Archbishop Anthony Poola of Hyderabad. Anthony Poola is the first Dalit Christian cardinal, a historic milestone for India and the global Catholic Church.
This report, explores Poola’s remarkable journey, his groundbreaking appointment, and the significance of his prestigious role.
On May 29, 2022, Pope Francis announced the creation of 21 new cardinals, including Archbishop Anthony Poola, marking him as the first Dalit Christian to be elevated to this rank.
Additionally, Poola became the first Telugu individual to hold the title of cardinal, the second-highest position in the Catholic Church after the Pope. His elevation was formalized during a consistory on August 27, 2022, at St. Peter’s Basilica.
Poola’s appointment places him in the College of Cardinals, a body of 242 cardinals, of whom 134 are electors (under age 80) tasked with selecting the next Pope. As a papal elector, Poola holds a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Catholic Church, a responsibility that underscores the prestige of his position.
Cardinals, often called “Princes of the Church,” are among the most influential figures in the Catholic Church. They serve as primary advisors to the Pope, assisting in matters of doctrine, governance, and global Church policy. The most critical duty of cardinals is electing a new Pope during a conclave, a process governed by strict protocols.
Appointed for life, cardinals hold their title until death or resignation, unless removed by the Pope.
Poola’s inclusion in this elite group amplifies the voices of India’s Dalit and Telugu communities on a global stage, aligning with Pope Francis’s vision of a more inclusive Church. His role as a cardinal is not only prestigious but also symbolic of breaking centuries-old barriers.
Anthony Poola was born on November 15, 1961, in Chindukur village, Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, to a Dalit family. Growing up in a marginalized community, Poola’s early life was shaped by faith and resilience. He began his religious formation at the minor seminary in Nuzvid and pursued theological studies at St. Peter’s Pontifical Major Seminary in Bengaluru.
Ordained a priest on February 20, 1992, for the Diocese of Kadapa, Poola dedicated his ministry to serving marginalized communities. On February 8, 2008, he was appointed Bishop of Kurnool and ordained as bishop on April 19, 2008. His leadership extended to roles such as chairman of the Youth Commission and the Scheduled Castes/Backward Classes Commission for the Andhra Pradesh Bishops’ Conference.
On November 19, 2020, Poola was appointed Archbishop of Hyderabad, a position he continues to hold. His consistent service to the Church and its marginalized members paved the way for his historic cardinalship.
Cardinal Poola’s elevation is a landmark for Dalit Christians, who face systemic discrimination in India. Dalit Christians, estimated to form a significant portion of India’s 19 million Catholics, have historically been underrepresented in senior Church roles. Poola’s appointment challenges these barriers, offering hope and representation to millions.
During Dalit History Month, Poola’s story resonates as a powerful example of overcoming adversity. His rise to cardinal reflects the Catholic Church’s growing commitment to inclusivity, a priority emphasized by Pope Francis.
Cardinal Anthony Poola’s journey from a Dalit village to the Vatican is a testament to faith, perseverance, and service. His appointment as the first Dalit and Telugu cardinal is a historic achievement that amplifies marginalized voices within the global Catholic Church.
As a papal elector and advisor to the Pope, Poola holds a prestigious role that shapes the Church’s future. During Dalit History Month, his story inspires not only the faithful but all who champion justice and equality, proving that barriers can be broken through dedication and grace.
