In a Historic First, New York Proclaims Ambedkar Day to Celebrate 134th Anniversary of Equality Icon Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

New York– New York City has set a historic milestone by proclaiming April 14, 2025, as “Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar Day,” celebrating the 134th birth anniversary of the renowned social reformer, economist, and political leader. Mayor Eric Adams announced the proclamation, honoring Dr. Ambedkar’s enduring contributions to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, India, Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was a trailblazer who earned a PhD in economics from Columbia University and a DSc from the London School of Economics. He is best known for chairing the committee that drafted India’s Constitution and advocating against social injustices, including the exploitation of farmers and tenants and the practice of untouchability. His mantra, “educate, agitate, organize,” inspired generations to fight for justice and equity.

The proclamation highlights Ambedkar’s transformative journey and his time in New York, where he studied at Columbia University at age 22, graduating in 1927. “The Big Apple is proud to be a beacon of hope and opportunity,” the proclamation states, praising Ambedkar’s legacy of egalitarianism and calling for continued efforts to uphold his values in the city and beyond.

Community leaders, including Deelip Mhaske, President of the Foundation for Human Horizon, have expressed gratitude for this recognition. The event marks the first time New York City has dedicated a day to Ambedkar, reinforcing its commitment to honoring global champions of social justice.
