Focus on Decarbonization and Future Pathways for India’s Steel Industry

New Delhi- Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, inaugurated MMMM 2024, an international event focusing on "Process & Product Innovations in Metal Production" and Green Steel Production. During the event, the Minister highlighted the advancements in steel production, emphasizing India's role as the second-largest steel producer and the need to embrace digitalization and sustainable practices to minimize the industry’s carbon footprint. He reminded the industry of India’s commitments at COP26 to reduce carbon intensity by 45% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.

The Minister addressed the significant environmental impact of steel production, noting that India’s steel sector accounts for 12% of the nation’s total emissions. He introduced the Ministry of Steel’s "Greening the Steel Sector in India: Roadmap and Action Plan," which outlines strategies like energy efficiency, green hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies to reduce emissions. Industry leaders, including former Steel Secretary N.N. Sinha, stressed the importance of pursuing decarbonization to improve business outcomes, while stakeholders called for collaboration among metal producers, researchers, and industry players to drive innovation in low-carbon steel production.
