Geneva, Switzerland – Experts gathered at the ITU-UN Disaster Risk Reduction workshop yesterday, emphasizing the urgent need for cross-sector collaboration to leverage emerging technologies and standardized approaches in disaster risk reduction. Themed "Reimagining Disaster Risk Reduction: The Role of Standardization and Innovative Technologies," the workshop explored how advanced technologies can bolster disaster management capabilities.

Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of India's Department of Telecommunications, inaugurated the session by highlighting the rapid convergence of technology and its potential to revolutionize disaster mitigation. He emphasized the critical role of telecommunications as a foundational technology upon which all others depend. Mittal cited India's success with early warning systems, including the C-DoT developed cell broadcast technology, as a testament to the potential of technology in disaster risk reduction.

The workshop showcased the transformative potential of emerging technologies like AI, big data, digital twins, drones, remote sensing, and blockchain in disaster mitigation. Participants discussed how these technologies can improve prediction accuracy, optimize response times, and streamline recovery efforts. Standardization was key to integrating innovations to enhance global resilience against disasters.

Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the ITU, stressed the increasing frequency and intensity of disasters, highlighting the need for both traditional and emerging technologies. He emphasized ITU's commitment to disaster risk reduction, citing their work in satellite monitoring and emergency telecommunications clusters.

The workshop concluded with a call for deeper collaboration between industries, governments, and international organizations to ensure communities worldwide are better prepared and more resilient to natural disasters. The ITU-UNDRR workshop brought together policymakers, disaster management experts, and representatives from global organizations, all dedicated to advancing technology and standardization for disaster resilience.
