Tamulpur, Assam: In a move set to boost cross-border trade and travel, the Central government has designated the Darranga land check post in Assam's Tamulpur district as an authorized Immigration Check Post. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification on Friday, effective immediately, granting the post the status to allow entry into and exit from India for all passengers with valid travel documents.

This designation, falling under sub-rule (b) of rule 3 of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950, is expected to significantly streamline immigration processes and strengthen border management in the region. The Darranga check post, located near the international border with Bhutan and Bangladesh, has long been a crucial transit point for trade and travel.

Further enhancing its role, the Chief Immigration Officer of the Bureau of Immigration will assume the position of 'Civil Authority' at the Darranga Land Immigration Check Post, effective November 1, 2024. This appointment, as per sub-clause (2) of Clause 2 of the Foreigners Order, 1948, aims to facilitate smoother immigration procedures at the busy checkpoint.

This decision aligns with India's broader strategy to bolster border security, regulate immigration, and improve infrastructure at key cross-border transit points.
