Heera Nazmi Becomes Himanshi Kumari: Love Story That Has Uttar Pradesh Talking

Supporters view it as a story of personal choice and love triumphing over barriers, while critics and some activists highlight perceived double standards. They contrast it with cases labeled as “Love Jihad,” where Hindu women marrying Muslim men often face intense scrutiny, public protests, and allegations of coercion.

Badaun- In Badaun, a Muslim woman named Heera Nazmi has converted to Hinduism, adopted the name Himanshi Kumari, and married her Hindu partner Atul Kumar in a ceremony that has sparked significant discussion online.

According to multiple local reports, the couple, who hail from the Usawan police station area in Badaun district, had been in a relationship for about four years. Families on both sides reportedly opposed the interfaith romance and imposed restrictions, leading the pair to take decisive steps. Heera Nazmi voluntarily embraced Hinduism of her own free will, changed her name to Himanshi Kumari, and expressed concerns about potential threats from her family.

The couple first solemnized their union through a court marriage to fulfill legal requirements. They then performed a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony with seven pheras (circumambulations around the sacred fire) at the Khatu Shyam Temple in the Usawan area. The rituals included Vedic chants and full Hindu traditions. Members of the Rashtriya Bajrang Dal were present as witnesses and reportedly played a key role in facilitating the couple’s union amid family opposition. Police officials were also involved to ensure the event proceeded peacefully following complaints or disputes raised by the families.

Videos and images of the celebration, showing Bajrang Dal activists participating openly, have circulated widely on social media platforms. The woman is said to have left for her husband’s home after the ceremonies. As of the latest available information, there are no reports of arrests of Atul Kumar, his family, or Bajrang Dal members in connection with this case. Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion law (Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act) requires that religious conversions be voluntary, with prior notice to authorities in many cases, and prohibits conversions through force, fraud, or allurement. Proponents of the marriage emphasize that the woman acted of her own accord and that the union followed legal court marriage procedures.

This incident has triggered polarized reactions. Questions have been raised about whether media coverage and law enforcement responses would differ if the religious dynamics were reversed, with some accusing the system of selective application of laws.

Uttar Pradesh, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has seen several high-profile interfaith cases and strict enforcement of anti-conversion legislation aimed at preventing unlawful religious changes. In this specific instance, authorities appear to have facilitated a secure environment for the couple rather than initiating action against them or the Bajrang Dal participants. No FIRs against the organization or the groom’s side have been prominently reported in connection with the marriage itself.

The event highlights ongoing debates in India around personal liberty in marriage, religious conversion laws, and the role of community organizations in such matters.
