New Delhi - In a major shake-up ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge dissolved the entire state Congress unit, including district and block units, with immediate effect. The announcement came in a press statement by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.
This decision is part of a larger strategy to restructure the party in Uttar Pradesh and infuse fresh energy with a focus on youth and grassroots leadership. The Congress aims to regain its footing in the state, which it once considered a stronghold but has faced disappointing results in recent elections.
The dissolution affects all committees, sub-committees, and district-level units of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. All existing office bearers, executive committee members, and leaders with special designations are no longer in their positions.
The Congress leadership believes this move is crucial to address the party's performance in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2022 Assembly elections. With 403 Assembly seats, Uttar Pradesh plays a pivotal role in upcoming national elections.
The party intends to establish a new leadership with a better understanding of local issues and clearly defined accountability for past leaders. This reorganization is expected to have a significant impact on Assembly seats where the Congress currently has a weaker presence.
The Congress will focus on re-establishing its organization in both rural and urban areas, taking into account caste equations. This move follows a similar decision on November 6, where Kharge dissolved the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee and its subordinate units. **The organizational change aims to strengthen the Congress regionally. Uttar Pradesh could form new committees to balance young and experienced party leaders.
