New Delhi- The All India OBC Students Association (AIOBCSA) has raised serious concern over the blatant violation of OBC reservation policy in National Law Universities (NLUs) across the country. Out of the 27 NLUs, about 24 are not implementing the mandated 27% OBC reservations in the All India Quota (AIQ) seats for LLB and LLM admissions. In contrast, around 18 NLUs have already implemented 10% EWS reservations at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, highlighting the glaring injustice towards OBC students.

On August 14, an AIOBCSA delegation led by its National President, G. Kiran Kumar and Convenor Adv. Pankaj Singh met Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman, Bar Council of India (BCI), and submitted a detailed representation demanding the immediate enforcement of the Government of India’s reservation policy in the AIQ seats of all NLUs.

The delegation drew the Chairman’s urgent attention to the recommendations of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, which has categorically observed (in paragraphs 2.37 and 2.38 of its report) that many NLUs are not properly implementing reservations for SC/ST/OBC categories in both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions. MP P. Wilson has consistently raised this violation, writing to Chancellors of NLUs to ensure compliance.

The Committee has clearly recommended that:

The Bar Council of India must oversee the proper implementation of reservations in all law universities, including NLUs, law colleges, and other law institutions. In cases of non-compliance, the Bar Council of India should consider withdrawing recognition from the offending institutions.

In line with these recommendations, AIOBCSA has urged the Bar Council of India to:

1. Issue binding directions to all NLUs to implement the 27% OBC reservation policy in All India Quota seats for UG and PG admissions.

2. Ensure strict compliance with the reservation policy in faculty recruitment across all recognised law institutions.

3. Establish a robust monitoring mechanism with periodic compliance reports from institutions.

4. Withdraw recognition from institutions that continue to violate the Government of India’s reservation policy.

AIOBCSA stated that denial of OBC reservations while implementing EWS reservations is a grave injustice that must be rectified immediately. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to continue its struggle until full implementation of constitutional rights for OBC students is achieved.
