UP Govt Launches Street Vendor Recognition Initiative

Street vendors to be appointed as brand ambassadors at district and city levels

The Mooknayak English

Lucknow- In a move to empower street vendors and recognize their contribution to society, the Uttar Pradesh government launched a new initiative on Monday. The program, part of the Prime Minister Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar (PM SvaNidhi) scheme, will identify and appoint street vendors as brand ambassadors at the district and city levels.

The 'SvaNidhi Bhi, Swabhimaan Bhi' Fortnight, running from November 18 to December 2, marks the inauguration of this initiative. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has urged the Urban Development Department to ensure street vendors and their families actively participate in the event.

Under this scheme, individuals identified as "SvaNidhi Friends" - including members of the Town Vending Committee (TVC) and active street vendors - will assist other vendors in accessing the scheme's benefits and raising awareness about its provisions. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, according to the state government.

The Yogi government is also encouraging street vendors to adopt digital transactions by promoting initiatives like the SvaNidhi Diwali and Makar Sankranti festivals, which honored vendors with the highest cashback earnings through digital transactions. This initiative aims to promote Digital India across the state and increase street vendors' income transparency.

Furthermore, free medical camps and health checkups will be organized for street vendors and their families during the fortnight, addressing their healthcare needs. This effort is part of an initiative to bring healthcare services to a section of society often lacking access. Through these efforts, the Yogi government aims to provide financial support and social recognition to street vendors, ultimately empowering them to become more self-reliant.
