Tech Entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia's Call for Change: Combating Casteism Within the Hindu Community

Bhatia urges his fellow Hindus to stand alongside him in supporting California's anti-caste legislation SB 403, emphasizing the need for change within the community itself.

The Mooknayak English

In a thought-provoking note published on LinkedIn, Sabeer Bhatia, the renowned entrepreneur and co-founder of Hotmail, now known as Outlook, has expressed his public support for anti-caste legislation, specifically SB 403, in California.

Bhatia, a prominent figure in the technology industry, has used his platform to shed light on the persistence of casteism within the Hindu community and to advocate for change.

Bhatia's note begins with a reflection on the power of technology to connect people and bridge gaps, juxtaposed with the realization that caste-based discrimination has found its way to the shores of the United States, his adopted home.

He emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the presence of this deep-rooted prejudice within the Hindu community and calls for unity in the fight against casteism.

The note further delves into Bhatia's personal journey, growing up in a military household in India, where he was shielded from the issues of caste and religion. However, his educational opportunities in the United States exposed him to the reality of casteism and its impact. Bhatia refers to his story as a "Cinderella tale" but expresses his pain at witnessing casteism in the United States.

"My success story is often referred to as a Cinderella tale of achievement at a young age. Yet, it pains me to see that the haunting shadow of casteism has reached the land where dreams are said to come true", Bhatia wrote regrettably.

Acknowledges Casteism in Hindu Belief

One of the key messages Bhatia conveys is the need for self-reflection and acceptance of the problem. He acknowledges that in an attempt to protect the image of Hinduism, the community often turns a blind eye to the existence of casteism within its ranks. Bhatia argues that true progress lies in recognizing the issue and working together to eradicate it, even if it is not explicitly stated in religious texts.

Bhatia then highlights the significance of supporting SB 403, stating that it presents an opportunity for educated Hindus to lead by example in the fight against casteism. He emphasizes that this legislation is not an attack on faith but rather an acknowledgment of the subconscious biases that may have been inadvertently imparted due to upbringing or environment. SB 403 provides a legal framework to eliminate any trace of prejudice and discrimination, ensuring a society that upholds the values of equality and justice.

Prioritizing Education

Education and awareness play a crucial role in Bhatia's vision for change. Drawing from his own experience, he believes that education holds the key to transforming mindsets and dismantling the chains of casteism.

"We must prioritize education and awareness programs that promote inclusivity and challenge the deep-seated biases we may have inherited or misunderstood. Through dialogue and education, we can reshape our collective consciousness and foster a more egalitarian society" Bhatia asserts.

Supporting the Senate Bill 403

Supporting SB 403, according to Bhatia, is not an admission of guilt or shame, but a demonstration of the Hindu community's commitment to building a society where every individual is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their caste. It represents progress within the community by acknowledging the flaws and working towards rectifying them.

He says in the note, "Every society gets a moment in time for self-reflection and an opportunity to rise above their traditions for the greater good. This is that moment for us. Let us show leadership by embracing SB 403 - as discrimination should NOT be something we stand for".

Bhatia urges his fellow Hindus to stand alongside him in supporting SB 403, emphasizing the need for change within the community itself.

He calls for a society where caste-based discrimination is eradicated, and all individuals are afforded equal opportunities and respect.

As a reputed entrepreneur and advocate for equality, Sabeer Bhatia's public support for anti-caste legislation sends a powerful message, encouraging dialogue and action to combat casteism within the Hindu community and beyond.
