Canberra- The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken a groundbreaking step in addressing caste discrimination, a deeply entrenched social issue, with the release of its National Anti-Racism Framework. This milestone makes Australia one of the first Western nations to systematically confront caste-based oppression alongside broader anti-racism initiatives.

The Periyar Ambedkar Thoughts Circle of Australia (PATCA) has lauded the AHRC and Race Discrimination Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman for their efforts in highlighting caste discrimination as a critical issue. The framework recommends legal protections against caste discrimination, including potential reforms to existing anti-discrimination legislation, and proposes the adoption of a national Human Rights Act to enhance protections.

"This is a transformative victory for Dravidian ideology and caste-oppressed communities, particularly caste-oppressed Hindus and Tamils," said Dr. Anna Mahizhnan, President of PATCA. "The AHRC's work embodies the ideals of Periyar and Dr. Ambedkar—dismantling systems of oppression and championing equality."

Bold Legal Reforms Proposed

The framework emphasizes embedding anti-discrimination measures across institutions to guarantee equal access to housing, education, and cultural opportunities. It also outlines enhanced protections against faith and caste-based discrimination while addressing the intersecting impacts of racism and climate change on marginalized communities.

PATCA's General Secretary, Sumathy Vijayakumar, highlighted the global significance of these developments. "By addressing caste discrimination, Australia sets a global precedent. This work is a beacon of hope for caste-oppressed communities worldwide."

The AHRC's proposed Human Rights Act aims to prevent rights violations and ensure access to justice for individuals experiencing racism and intersecting forms of discrimination. The reforms promise to create a more inclusive and equitable society while strengthening Australia's commitment to human rights.

PATCA has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the AHRC in implementing the framework's recommendations to ensure their transformative impact. "These measures signify a paradigm shift in combating systemic discrimination, and we are eager to support their rollout," added Dr. Mahizhnan.

The National Anti-Racism Framework is being celebrated as a visionary roadmap to eliminating racism in Australia, offering holistic protections for vulnerable communities and setting a high standard for human rights advocacy globally.
