Tenali- A disturbing incident of alleged police brutality has come to light in Tenali, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, where three youths were reportedly beaten on a public road by police personnel. The incident, captured in a viral video shared by YSRCP leader and Ex Minister Ambati Rambabu on social media platform X on May 26, has ignited widespread condemnation and calls for justice.
According to reports, the three youths, identified as Chebrolu John Victor (25), Sheikh Babulal alias Karimulla (21), and Doma Rakesh, all residents of Tenali and Mangalagiri towns, were subjected to a public thrashing by a police constable named Kanna Chiranjivi. The video shows the youths being forced to sit on Tenali Highway as the constable allegedly struck their feet with a stick and, in one instance, placed his foot on a youth’s knee, appearing to exert pressure.
The police claim the youths were intoxicated with ganja and had attacked Constable Chiranjivi, prompting the response. However, the victims allege that the constable demanded a bribe, and upon their refusal, he fabricated a case against them, leading to the public assault. The absence of any legal investigation or hearing prior to the incident has raised serious concerns about human rights violations and caste-based injustice.
The viral video, widely circulated on X, has drawn sharp criticism from activists and political figures. Posts on X describe the incident as a “shocking display of police cruelty” and a “clear violation of human rights,” with many highlighting the caste angle, noting the victims belong to marginalized Dalit and minority communities. Users have demanded a fair judicial inquiry and strict action against the responsible officers.
In response to the public outcry, the policeman involved has been suspended. However, no official statement from the Andhra Pradesh Police or the Guntur district administration has been released regarding further investigation or charges against the constable.
This incident has reignited discussions about police reform and the protection of marginalized communities in India. Critics argue that such acts of public humiliation without due process reflect systemic issues within law enforcement, particularly when dealing with vulnerable groups.
