Telangana to File Complaint Over Andhra Pradesh's Excessive Krishna River Water Usage

Chief Minister stresses need for increased vigilance

Hyderabad- Telangana's government is set to file a formal complaint with central authorities over Andhra Pradesh's alleged excessive usage of Krishna River water. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed irrigation officials to alert federal authorities about water drawn beyond allocated shares from the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar projects. To address the monitoring challenges, Reddy has proposed implementing a telemetry system, with Telangana offering to cover all implementation costs after Andhra Pradesh's reported reluctance to contribute its share. The Chief Minister has instructed Irrigation Principal Secretary Rahul Bojja to inform the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) about this decision and request immediate action.

The dispute has sparked political controversy, with opposition leader K.T. Rama Rao of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) criticizing the Congress government's handling of the situation. According to Rama Rao, Andhra Pradesh has already utilized 646 TMC of Krishna water and has been drawing 10,000 cusecs daily through the Nagarjuna Sagar right canal for three months, while claiming the Telangana government has remained passive. The Central Water Commission's role in allocating and monitoring water usage between the two states has become increasingly significant as tensions rise over resource distribution.

Meanwhile, Telangana is preparing for potential summer challenges, with Chief Minister Reddy directing officials to implement careful water management strategies for the upcoming months. Officials have been instructed to conduct regular field assessments and monitor water levels across major projects, including Srisailam, Nagarjuna Sagar, and SRSP.

The administration is particularly focused on maintaining adequate water supplies for both irrigation and drinking purposes during the peak summer period, with specific instructions issued to ensure farmers receive adequate water supply for their crops and to protect against heat-related stress.
