Manipur's Kangpokpi District on Edge After Clashes

Villagers protest alleged harassment by security forces

Imphal, Manipur — Clashes between Naga and Kuki-Zo communities in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district prompted a curfew Saturday, while a separate incident in Kamjong district saw a mob destroy an Assam Rifles camp.

In Kangpokpi, tension has simmered for the past three days in the Kangchup Geljang sub-division following a territorial dispute between the Naga-dominated Konsakhul village and the Kuki-Zo-inhabited Leilon Vaiphei village. The dispute escalated when a Naga woman was allegedly assaulted Jan. 7, leading to minor clashes between the villagers. District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari imposed an indefinite curfew in the sub-division to prevent further unrest. The curfew prohibits movement in and around the Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei villages until further notice. No injuries have been reported in the clashes.

Meanwhile, in Kamjong district, a mob destroyed a makeshift Assam Rifles camp Saturday. The incident stems from allegations of harassment and restrictions imposed by the Assam Rifles on the transportation of timber for house construction in Kasom Khullen village. The Assam Rifles used tear gas shells and fired into the air to disperse the mob, but no injuries were reported. The villagers of Konsakhul claim that Leilon Vaiphei village is part of their territory, but this claim is strongly opposed by the villagers of Leilon Vaiphei.
