Manipur Ethnic Conflict: CPI-M Calls for Central Intervention

Party demands removal of CM Biren Singh, dialogue with stakeholders

New Delhi/Imphal- The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has called for immediate central government intervention in Manipur, demanding the removal of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and the initiation of dialogue among all parties involved in the conflict. The demand comes as part of the party's draft political resolution, adopted at its Central Committee meeting in Kolkata and published ahead of its 24th party Congress scheduled for April 2-6, 2025, in Madurai.

The resolution criticizes both the state and central BJP governments' handling of the ethnic violence that began in May 2023, highlighting that the conflict has resulted in 250 deaths and displaced 60,000 people who are currently living in camps. The CPI-M particularly noted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the state since the violence began and criticized Chief Minister Singh's "partisan role" in the conflict.

According to the CPI-M's assessment, while security forces were eventually deployed, the central government has failed to take significant steps toward initiating dialogue with various stakeholders, including political parties and ethnic groups.

The party, which is part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc in Manipur, warns that this inaction could lead to an escalation of conflict across the entire northeastern region. Party leaders, including Central Committee member Jitendra Chaudhury, who visited affected areas in Manipur, have alleged that the violence aligns with what they describe as the BJP-RSS strategy of creating divisions among people nationwide.
