Imphal- Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh addressed the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state during a commemorative event for Nupee Lal Numit (women’s war day) on Thursday. He acknowledged the "unprecedented" nature of the crisis and the efforts of both the state and central governments to find a lasting solution. However, Singh cautioned that the situation's chronic and fragile nature would require time to resolve.
The Chief Minister also provided an update on the search for Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a civilian who went missing from the Leimakhong Army campus on November 25. Singh assured the public that the state government, in collaboration with central forces, is actively working to locate the missing individual. Singh reported that Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a Gossaipur resident in southern Assam's Cachar district, went missing after leaving his Loitang Khunou village residence in Imphal West district on November 25 to work as a supervisor for a contractor with the Military Engineering Services (MES) at the Leimakhong military station.
Addressing the recent re-imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas, Singh stated that the government has requested the Centre to review and withdraw the act. He appealed for public cooperation and support in the government's endeavors to restore peace and tranquility in Manipur.
Meanwhile, the search for Laishram Kamalbabu Singh, a 56-year-old Meitei man, continues with over 2,000 army and Assam Rifles personnel deployed. Defense sources revealed the use of tracker dogs, drones, and other technological aids in the operation.
The disappearance has sparked protests from various Meitei community organizations who allege that Singh was kidnapped by Kuki militants. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the Meira Paibis (women vigilantes in Manipur) have joined in the demands for his rescue, appealing to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their intervention.
Adding to the unrest, demonstrations demanding the repeal of the AFSPA took place on December 10 in Imphal. Thousands of protestors, including students, gathered, calling for the act's removal and action against those responsible for the recent deaths of three women and three children in Jiribam. Five prominent organizations, including AMUCO, Poirei Leimarol Apunba Meira Paibi, and AMAWOVA, organized a rally that started at Thau ground in Imphal West district, covered 5 km, and ended at Khuman Lampak stadium with a public meeting. Protesters demanded the immediate repeal of the AFSPA while holding placards and chanting slogans like 'Do not obliterate Manipur' and 'Save Manipur'.
