New Delhi- On September 11, the Union Cabinet approved the launch of 'Mission Mausam,' a two-year initiative aimed at boosting India's capacity to manage extreme weather and climate challenges. With an allocated budget of ₹2,000 crore, the mission will be overseen by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The primary goal of Mission Mausam is to enhance India's weather preparedness by improving research and developing advanced climate science capabilities. The initiative will provide citizens and critical sectors with tools and resources to better manage extreme weather conditions and address the escalating effects of climate change. The mission is expected to bolster resilience across communities, ecosystems, and industries over time.

A key focus of the initiative will be expanding research in atmospheric sciences, with particular attention to weather monitoring, forecasting, and modelling. Cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high-performance computing will be integrated to enhance the precision of weather predictions.

The mission aims to improve weather observation systems, offering reliable and timely information on important areas like monsoon forecasts, air quality updates, and warnings for severe weather events, including heavy rainfall, hail, and fog. Additionally, Mission Mausam will prioritize capacity-building initiatives and public awareness campaigns to address climate-related challenges. Technologies like next-generation radars, advanced satellite systems, and supercomputers will be crucial in ensuring the mission's success. A GIS-based automated Decision Support System will also be established for real-time data distribution.
