India and Denmark Collaborate on Clean River Initiative

Environmental Strategic Partnership invests in Varuna River revitalization

The Mooknayak English

New Delhi- The Environmental Strategic Partnership between the governments of India and Denmark has established a Smart Laboratory on Clean Rivers (SLCR) to work for the preservation of the Varuna River.

The SLCR has received Rs 16.8 crore in initial funding from the Jal Shakti Ministry and an additional Rs 5 crore grant from Denmark. The project is expected to work for the sustainable development of the river by using advanced technologies.

The 2-3-year project will analyse the water dynamics of the river using hydrological models to create a comprehensive river management plan. This will include real-time monitoring and data visualisation tools to support better decision-making for water management.

A selected stretch of the Varuna River will be subject to interventions based on a holistic plan and river manual, with the aim of enhancing regional economic and social development while ensuring good river health. This project has a target of 2-3 years.

The final project in the series, the Hydrogeological Model of the Varuna Basin for Recharge Sites, aims to enhance the base flow of the river through managed aquifer recharge. This project will use advanced geophysical techniques and mathematical modelling to identify the most suitable recharge sites and rates. The goal is to integrate data from different sources and develop a comprehensive model for the river-aquifer flow dynamics to support better decision-making and water resource management.

The SLCR is a unique tripartite initiative between governments of India and Denmark, bringing together the expertise of both countries for the rejuvenation and management of small rivers. The project is expected to create a platform for collaboration between government bodies, knowledge institutions and local communities to share insights and develop solutions for clean river water.
