Varanasi- A case of administrative negligence has emerged from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Uttar Pradesh, where a Dalit student from the 2021-2024 B.Com batch faced significant setbacks due to an oversight by the university. The failure to evaluate one of his exam papers left his marksheet incomplete, leading to the cancellation of his M.Com admission. However, following the timely intervention of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), the student ultimately secured justice.

The student, Nirbhay Chand Ahirwar, had successfully passed all his B.Com semester exams and even cleared the CUET-PG exam to secure admission to the M.Com program. However, he had no idea that a mistake on the part of the university would jeopardize his future.

The administration failed to evaluate one of his B.Com first-semester papers, leaving his marksheet incomplete. Consequently, not only was he advised to repeat an entire year, but on July 18, 2024, his M.Com admission was also canceled.

Despite reaching out to officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and other responsible figures through letters, emails, and personal visits, Nirbhay's pleas were consistently ignored. Instead of giving up, Nirbhay sought the assistance of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC).

Speaking to The Mooknayak, Nirbhay revealed that on July 28, 2024, he filed a petition with both the commission and the Allahabad High Court. In his plea, he made two primary requests: first, that his incomplete B.Com marks be released, and second, that his M.Com admission be reinstated.

He also demanded accountability from the university administration for their failure. On August 8, 2024, the SC Commission took cognizance of the matter and issued a notice to the BHU Vice-Chancellor.

This intervention yielded positive results, as Nirbhay’s marks were updated on the portal on August 14. However, despite this, BHU administration failed to take any decisive action regarding his M.Com admission.

Even after receiving his updated marksheet, Nirbhay was still denied admission. On August 27, he filed another petition with the SC Commission.

This second plea highlighted the persistence of injustice, showing that students should not have to rely on judicial intervention to claim their rightful place.

Following this, another notice was issued to the BHU administration, and on September 5, Nirbhay was finally granted admission to the M.Com program.
