New Delhi- In the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections 2025, Komal Devi of the Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) has achieved a resounding victory for the Councillor post from the School of Social Sciences (SSS).
This triumph has ignited jubilation across the Bahujan community, marking BAPSA's return to SSS after 11 years of relentless struggle. Komal Devi's campaign speech – "My feminism starts from the fields, threshing floors, and settlements..." – has fired up Dalit-Bahujan students, turning her win into a symbol of grassroots empowerment and a festival of resistance on campus.
Dalit student Komal Devi, a postgraduate in SSS, anchored her campaign in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's mantra of "Educate! Agitate! Organize!" Her emotional video message, featuring the poignant declaration – "My feminism starts from the fields, threshing floors, and settlements..." – brought the voices of rural Indian women echoing through JNU's corridors. She openly challenged "Hindutva fascism" and "Savarna Left hypocrisy," sparking a wave of enthusiasm among Bahujan students. Following the announcement of results, social media erupted with #KomalDevi and #BAPSAVictory trending, as Bahujan activists saluted her success with cries of "Jai Bhim" and "Hul Johar."
BAPSA's victory in SSS – JNU's largest school with over 2,000 students – signals a revival of Bahujan representation. The organization's official statement proclaimed, "This victory is a step towards reclaiming our spaces, our voices, and our dignity. We reject co-option, we reject tokenism — this is the politics of self-respect and autonomy." The Bahujan community is celebrating this win like a festival, with hundreds of posts on X (formerly Twitter) hailing it as a "Bahujan awakening." Allied groups like the Neelam Cultural Center extended their congratulations.
Political Scientist and Asst. Prof. at Jadavpur University Subhajit Naskar celebrated her victory in his social media post, which reads: "Dalit Girl Komal from extremely marginalised Valmiki Community in Haryana becomes Councillor from School of Social Sciences. Her victory is victory of women on margin across world & indomitable face against Brahminical Patriarchy."
In this election, BAPSA secured only one seat – the SSS Councillor. The central panel saw a clean sweep by the Left Unity (SFI, AISA, AISF), including the posts of President, Vice-President, General Secretary, and Joint Secretary. ABVP failed to win any seats, a setback after their single victory in the previous year. Contesting independently, BAPSA's success reinforces the legacies of Ambedkar, Phule, and Birsa Munda.
Komal Devi's platform emphasized combating caste-based discrimination, advancing gender equality, and ensuring equitable resource distribution. Defeating her rival Rahul Motghare, she championed Bahujan unity. As Councillor, she will amplify marginalized voices in council debates. Media reports have dubbed her win the "end of an 11-year drought."
Amid post-election fervor on the JNU campus, Komal's victory opens doors to new alliances for progressive reforms. BAPSA marked the occasion in a post: "We have our own tune and rhythm to celebrate our struggle and victory."
