Nationwide protests planned over Amit Shah's remarks on B.R. Ambedkar

Congress, Trinamool Congress, and BSP to participate in demonstrations

New Delhi - The Indian National Congress announced a nationwide campaign today demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his controversial remarks about B.R. Ambedkar, who drafted India's Constitution. As per a press statement by Congress General Secretary, Organisation, K.C. Venugopal, the party resolved to escalate its demand for Amit Shah's resignation, following a high-level meeting chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress party deems Shah's comments as "offensive and disrespectful" and has planned a series of actions to amplify their demand for his removal from office. On December 22 or 23, all Congress MPs and CWC members will hold press conferences in their constituencies or district headquarters to condemn the remarks and demand Shah's resignation.

Furthermore, a "Babasaheb Ambedkar Samman March" will be organized in every district across India on December 24.

The march will commence with a garlanding of Dr. Ambedkar's statue and culminate in the submission of a memorandum to the President through the respective District Collectors. Participants are urged to display large portraits of Dr. Ambedkar and carry placards demanding an apology from Amit Shah and his removal from the Union Cabinet.

The Congress party, in its statement, emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar, stating, "These actions reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the legacy of Dr Ambedkar, who remains a beacon of justice and equality for the nation. We urge all party leaders, workers, and the public to actively participate in these initiatives."

The Trinamool Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have also announced their support for the protests. The Trinamool Congress will hold block-level and ward-level protest rallies on December 23, condemning Shah's remarks as an "insult to Babasaheb" and an "attack on the entire Drafting Committee of the Indian Constitution, an assault on the legacy of our freedom fighters, and a betrayal of our Dalit and Adivasi brethren."

The BSP, led by Mayawati, will stage a nationwide agitation on December 24, organizing dharnas and demonstrations at all district headquarters across the country. The BSP chief expressed her party's strong disapproval of Amit Shah's statements in a series of posts on X.
