Meerut- In a rare and heartwarming display of parental support, retired judge Gyanendra Kumar Sharma and his family celebrated the return of his daughter Pranita Sharma after her divorce was finalized by the Meerut Family Court on Saturday, 4 April.
Pranita Sharma, who works as Finance Director at Pranav Vashisht Judicial Academy in Meerut’s Shastri Nagar and holds a postgraduate degree in Psychology, had married Army Major Gaurav Agnihotri, a resident of Kona Yakubpur, Shahjahanpur, on 14 December 2018.
The marriage lasted nearly eight years but turned sour due to alleged mental, physical, and emotional harassment from her husband and in-laws. The couple has a son. After years of enduring the troubled relationship, Pranita decided to seek divorce. The family court granted the decree on 4 April, with no alimony or property claims made by Pranita’s side.
As soon as the divorce was formalized, Pranita’s family gave her a grand welcome. Dhol and nagade beats echoed as family members, including her retired judge father, danced and celebrated. They garlanded Pranita with flowers, distributed sweets to everyone present, and danced all the way from the court to their home in Meerut. All family members wore identical black T-shirts printed with “I Love My Daughter” and Pranita’s photo.
Speaking to the media, Gyanendra Kumar Sharma said,
“If my daughter was not happy after marriage, then it is my duty to keep her happy. I have not taken any alimony or goods. I have just brought my daughter back home with honour.” He added that daughters should be treated as equal to sons and that no parent should force their child to stay in an unhappy marriage.
The unique celebration has gone viral on social media, with many praising the father for standing by his daughter and sending a strong message against societal pressure on women in unhappy marriages. Pranita is the only daughter of the family; her brother Pranav Vashisht passed away in an accident in 2022. This incident highlights changing attitudes in some families who prioritize their daughter’s well-being and happiness over outdated social norms.
