TRAI: Regulators Meet to Curb Spam and Fraud

Joint Committee of Regulators (JCoR) discusses measures to mitigate the problem

New Delhi-The Joint Committee of Regulators (JCoR), comprising members of various government departments, met at its headquarters in New Delhi to discuss ways to tackle the problem of spam and fraud.

The meeting discussed the need for a joint effort to address the issue of spam and fraud. The participants committed to implementing various measures to mitigate the problem of spam and fraud, including the whitelisting of URLs, APKs, OTT links, and call back numbers in SMS messages, migration of existing telemarketers making promotional calls to 140 series on the DLT platform, and declaration of the entire chain of telemarketers engaged by them for PE-TM chain binding.

In this regard, TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti stated that it is extremely important to work together to address the problem of spam and fraud. He urged the regulators to discuss and enable the implementation of the measures proposed to address the problem of spam and fraud.

The meeting also discussed the use of PRI/SIP channels for making unsolicited calls, which is a violation of TRAI's regulations. In this regard, the regulators requested the telecom operators to take necessary steps to prevent the misuse of PRI/SIP channels.

The regulators also discussed the importance of leveraging the DCA system established by telecom service providers for obtaining digital consent from consumers, which will help in providing them with message and call services, despite their DND preference.

In this regard, TRAI requested the telecom operators to implement the DCA system on a timely basis.

The JCoR also discussed the enhancement of information sharing among regulators to control frauds using telecom resources. In this regard, the participants committed to enhancing the information exchange among various regulators on their platforms for effective utilization.
