New Delhi- The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The horrific incident, which occurred on August 9th, led to the immediate arrest of a civic volunteer by Kolkata Police. The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with doctors across India demanding swift and decisive action.
On August 13th, the Calcutta High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to assume control of the investigation, following petitions filed by the victim's parents and other concerned individuals. The court also rebuked West Bengal authorities for failing to prevent acts of vandalism during protests at the hospital on August 14th.
In response to the escalating situation, the Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing on the matter for Tuesday, signaling the gravity of the case and the urgent need for justice.
