West Bengal Doctors Seek Iconic Crossing Name Change

Dorina Crossing could be renamed 'Abhaya Crossing' to honor slain doctor

Kolkata – The West Bengal Doctors' Forum has urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to rename Dorina Crossing, a prominent protest site in central Kolkata, to 'Abhaya Crossing' in honor of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in August.

The forum, in an email communique to Banerjee on Wednesday, highlighted that “Abhaya,” the name given to the victim due to legal restrictions on revealing her identity, symbolizes the ongoing movement for justice, security, and honor. The forum's leader emphasized that the meaning of “Abhaya” extends beyond its dictionary definition of a brave woman, representing a broader call for justice.

This request comes as another doctors' group, the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, continues its protest at Dorina Crossing until Thursday, demanding action against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for failing to file a supplementary charge sheet against two individuals accused of evidence tampering in the case.
