R.G. Kar Case: Court Convicts Civic Volunteer for Rape, Murder

Sanjay Roy found guilty in death of junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital

Kolkata- A special court in Kolkata has found civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty of raping and murdering a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital. The verdict, delivered on Saturday, marks what the victim's father describes as just the beginning of their pursuit for complete justice.

The judgment was pronounced by Anirban Das, the additional district and sessions judge of the Sealdah court.

On August 9, 2024 , an on-duty 31-year-old doctor at the state-run Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered. Her semi-naked body was found on the third floor of the seminar hall.

The father expressed gratitude to the court while maintaining his belief that the case involves a larger conspiracy beyond the convicted perpetrator. He has called for continued investigation and advocated for capital punishment for Roy.

The case has additional complexity due to ongoing concerns about evidence tampering. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has indicated the possibility of filing a supplementary charge sheet regarding these allegations. This development follows the earlier default bail granted to two key figures - the former hospital principal Sandip Ghosh and former Tala Police Station SHO Abhijit Mondal - who were accused of interfering with the initial investigation.

The court is scheduled to announce Roy's sentence on Monday, while questions about broader institutional involvement remain under scrutiny. Legal experts note that while the primary criminal case has reached a verdict, investigations into evidence manipulation could reveal additional dimensions to the case.
