Kolkata: Doctor's Death Prompts Hospital Principal's Resignation

Sandip Ghosh steps down following alleged rape and murder of on-duty doctor

Kolkata- The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has resigned after the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year old on-duty trainee doctor. Doctors and post-graduate students at the Medical College continued their strike for the fourth day.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met the family of the deceased doctor at their residence at Sodepur in Kolkata on Monday.

After meeting the family, the Chief Minister said that the parents of the doctor are of the opinion that more people may also have been involved in the crime. If the police do not get a resolution in this case by next Sunday, then the state government will hand over the case to the CBI.

At the same time, the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, Sandip Ghosh, has resigned from his position. Ghosh has resigned from service after the alleged murder of an on-duty doctor.

The trainee doctor was found in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital with injury marks on her body, and an autopsy later confirmed that she was raped before being murdered. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10 (Saturday) and has been sent to 14-day police custody.
