UP: Doctors Protest Against the Brazen Violation of Reservation Rules at KGMU

An advertisement issued by the medical university earmarked 69% reservation for the unreserved, 12% for Other Backward Castes, 5% for Scheduled Castes, 0% for Scheduled Tribes, and 10% for Economically Backward Castes, in which case the roster rules were flouted.

Lucknow: Discrepancies in following the reservation rules may not be something new, but the trend has gathered momentum in the last few years. The discrepancy in the recruitment of 69000 teachers was something that was accepted by the government itself. Another issue that has gathered momentum is the violation of reservation at the prestigious KGMU (King George Medical University). A demonstration was planned at the KGMU gate but was stopped by the police. However, some doctors, gave a memorandum to the Governor on Tuesday, against the discrepancy followed in the appointment of the doctors.

An advertisement issued by the medical university had earmarked 69% reservation for the unreserved, 12% for Other Backward Castes, 5% for Scheduled Castes, 0% for Scheduled Tribes, and 10% for Economically Backward Castes, in which case the roster rules were flouted. The SC/ST Teachers Association had complained to The National Commission of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes of irregularities in the notification. The SC/ST Commission found discrepancies in the notification and directed the KGMU to make changes to the notification commensurate with the reservation policy. The issue had also reached the Governor, and the Governor's house had issued a notice to the University demanding their reply on this issue.

Dr. Santosh Kumar, the Head of the Department of the Respiratory Department at KGMU, told The Mooknayak that such a situation arose because, in the previous roster, a department was considered a unit, whereas afterward, the entire institute was considered a unit. In the meantime, 10% reservation for EWS was also introduced. Later, a new roster was introduced, and a new advertisement was released, but in the new advertisement, instead of separating the backlog vacancies, they were merged with the new vacancies to the detriment of the reserved candidates. He further said that the members of SC and OBC communities who were members of the roster wrote comments against it, and a member of the Scheduled Caste didn't sign, but the notification was passed nevertheless.

The National Commission of Scheduled Castes also acknowledged that the notification was unfair. He wondered that the reservation has been flouted with such impunity despite the provision of stringent action for not adhering to the reservation rules. Dr. Ramchandra Patel, the president of the Akhil Bharatiya Pichda Varg Mahasangh, who presented the memorandum, demanded that action should be taken against the Vice-Chancellor under section 16(2) of the KGMU Act and Article 5 of the Reservation Act. We have also demanded the implementation of reservation in other institutes and universities; otherwise, there will be a movement at the district level, and the SC/ST MP/MLAs will be gheraoed.
