Imphal- The Manipur government announced a three-day extension of the mobile internet and data service suspension in seven districts on Wednesday. This decision comes as the curfew, imposed in four Imphal Valley districts following recent violence, was relaxed for five hours on Thursday.
The suspension, initially ordered for two days on November 16th, was extended for two more days on Wednesday. It will now remain in effect until 5:15 p.m. on Saturday in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur districts. The decision, announced by Commissioner, Home, N. Ashok Kumar, cites the ongoing law and order situation as the reason for the extension.
The suspension was initially implemented in response to widespread violence and mob attacks that erupted in Imphal East and Imphal West districts on November 16th. The unrest followed the recovery of six bodies in Jiribam district on November 15th and 16th, belonging to three missing children and three women.
While no major incidents have been reported recently, the curfew in Imphal East and West, Thoubal, and Kakching districts was temporarily lifted from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday. This relaxation aims to allow residents to purchase essential items and perform important work.
The Home Department has also conditionally lifted the suspension on fixed-line broadband internet services, recognizing the difficulties faced by students, professionals, and various institutions.
