Mumbai - In a significant scientific discovery, a team of four researchers from Christ College in Irinjalakuda, Kerala, along with independent researcher Gautam Kadam, have unveiled a new species of spider found in the lush bamboo grass of Kudal, Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. The researchers have officially named this newfound arachnid "Sparbambus sindhudurg," with Sparbambus representing the genus name and sindhudurg signifying the district where the spider was collected.

This remarkable finding was recently published in the renowned international journal, Zootaxa, which specializes in taxonomy, marking a momentous contribution to the field of biological classification and discovery. Sparbambus sindhudurg is the second species in the Sparbambus genus and is the first-ever record of this genus in India.

The spider, which measures between 6 to 8 millimeters in adulthood, has distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other arachnids. Researchers Rishikesh Tripathi, Gautam Kadam, Asha Theresa, and Sudhikumar A. V were the key contributors to this remarkable discovery.

This genus, Sparbambus, was previously known to host a single species found in China and Malaysia, making the appearance of Sparbambus sindhudurg in India an exciting revelation. The researchers believe this new discovery expands our understanding of the distribution of this unique genus and hints at the diverse ecosystems India hosts.
