India Leads the Biotech Revolution: Unveiling the BioE3 Policy

Union Minister projects exponential growth driven by BioE3 policy

New Delhi- Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, formally unveiled the transformative BioE3 policy at the L Media Centre in Delhi, emphasizing India's leadership in the forthcoming Industrial Revolution. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his unwavering support, noting that this policy would serve as a critical milestone in advancing India's bioeconomy and would play a pivotal role in realizing the vision of a developed India by 2047 (Viksit Bharat @2047).

The BioE3 policy, recently approved by the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, focuses on fostering high-performance biomanufacturing. It aligns with key national initiatives such as the 'Net Zero' carbon economy and the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Singh hailed India’s rapid rise as a global biotech leader, emphasizing that the Prime Minister will be globally recognized as a driving force behind the new biotech boom.

Dr. Singh outlined the six thematic areas targeted by the policy, including bio-based chemicals, functional foods, precision biotherapeutics, climate-resilient agriculture, carbon capture and utilization, and futuristic marine and space research. He highlighted that the BioE3 policy will significantly impact sectors such as food, energy, and health, while also reinforcing India's innovative and competitive biotech industry.

Reflecting on India's remarkable progress in the biotechnology sector, Dr. Singh noted that the country’s bioeconomy has grown from $10 billion in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024, with projections to reach $300 billion by 2030. He also emphasized that while the IT revolution was led by the West, the biotechnology revolution will be driven by India.

The event was also attended by Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, and Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member (S&T) of NITI Aayog, who joined Dr. Singh in interacting with the media.
