Bengaluru – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah clarified on Thursday that the formation of a commission for internal reservation is not a delaying tactic by the Congress government. The commission is expected to submit its report within the next two months.

In a press conference, Siddaramaiah stated, “After a demand spanning three decades for internal reservation within Scheduled Castes in the state, the cabinet has granted in-principle approval for this process.”

He explained that there are 101 sub-groups within the Scheduled Castes, and the government has decided to implement internal reservation in a scientifically structured way, with consideration of all these groups.

According to Siddaramaiah, a commission led by a retired High Court judge will be constituted under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, to oversee this process.

He further stated, “The cabinet has decided that the commission should submit its report within two months. Until a final decision is reached, the government has opted not to issue new notifications for direct recruitment in civil services under the state’s control and other categories.”

He also noted that the Telangana government had set up a similar commission for implementing internal reservation.

He added that, as per the Supreme Court’s guidance, adequate scientific data is essential for implementing internal reservation. The state government has decided to establish a commission to gather and analyze this data.

Siddaramaiah assured that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure that the commission submits its report within the designated timeline. Once the report is received, steps will be taken to implement internal reservation.

The Chief Minister said, “The Supreme Court recently stated that granting internal reservation is a constitutional measure. In light of this, the state government has made a revolutionary decision to implement internal reservation.”

He further added, “The government has established the commission to implement internal reservation appropriately, scientifically, and without controversy. This is not a ploy to delay or waste time. The government will act without compromising on social justice, working with everyone’s trust and confidence.”

The Congress-led Karnataka government recently announced its decision to implement internal reservation, calling it a historic move. However, the BJP criticized this decision, claiming it was made solely to gain an advantage in upcoming by-elections.
