Churu- A 30-year-old LLB student at the Government Law College in Churu has accused a professor of caste-based harassment, public humiliation using derogatory slurs, and deliberately failing her in practical examinations out of caste prejudice. Meena Meghwal, daughter of Toruram Meghwal and wife of Kailash Chandra, a resident of Khariya village under Malsisar police station in Jhunjhunu district, filed a detailed written complaint at Kotwali Police Station in Churu on 27 February.

In her complaint, Meena stated that she is a third-semester LLB student at the college. During a college programme in December 2025, when she asked a question, Professor Apoorva Sharma allegedly became furious and abused her in front of several students and faculty members. She reportedly called Meena “Chamari” and said, “You belong to a lower caste; studying LLB is not your job, you cannot do law.” Students including Akash Deep, Akash Mishra, Himanshu and Prem Prakash were present at the time, according to the complaint.

Meena further alleged that Professor Apoorva Sharma continued to harass and insult her regularly afterwards. In the practical examination, the professor awarded her only 6 marks out of 20, causing her to fail, while other professors had given 12 to 13 marks out of 20 in practicals for the remaining subjects. When Meena asked the reason for the low marks on 21 February, the professor allegedly replied, “It is my wish. I have done it. You people are from a lower caste.” Meena also named Professor Anil in her complaint for supporting the casteist behaviour.

The student claimed she had submitted a written complaint to the college administration earlier, but no action was taken and the humiliation continued. Following this, she approached the police. The Kotwali police immediately registered a case under Sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, registering it as Crime No. 44/2025. The original complaint and FIR copy have been forwarded to RPS Sunil Kumar Jhajharia, Circle Officer, Churu circle, for further investigation.

The matter has started circulating on social media after a local journalist associated with BAMCEF, Naveen Kumar Nandan (@NkNandanLive), shared images of the FIR on X on 2 March drawing attention from Dalit organisations and local residents. Police investigation is ongoing. This incident has once again highlighted concerns about caste discrimination in higher educational institutions in Rajasthan.
