New Delhi- Historian and Delhi University Professor Ratan Lal has launched a scathing attack on top Bahujan leaders for their "silence" as right-wing groups brazenly attempt to rewrite history by declaring B.N. Rau - and not Dr. B.R. Ambedkar - as the chief architect of India's Constitution.
Despite fiery speeches invoking Ambedkar during elections, not a single prominent Dalit leader - including BSP chief Mayawati, Akash Anand, Bhim Army's Chandrashekhar Azad, LJP's Chirag Paswan or HAM's Jitan Ram Manjhi - has issued any statement condemning the controversial claims made at a recent Constitution Club event where portraits of Rau were displayed as "Constitution Maker".
The roots of this controversy stems from a recent seminar at Delhi’s Constitution Club, where Shambhavi Peethadhishwar Anand Swaroop Maharaj claimed in his address that B.N. Rau was the "real architect" of the Constitution. Among the attendees was former Uttar Pradesh DIG Jugul Kishore Tiwari. Photos from the event show guests holding portraits of Rao labeled "Constitution Maker."
The incident has sparked outrage among Dalit communities, with sharp reactions on social media against the attempt to erase Ambedkar’s legacy. Many have condemned it as an insult to Dr. Ambedkar and the Constitution, demanding strict legal action. Surprisingly, prominent Bahujan leaders have remained silent.
In an episode of Ambedkarnama, Professor Ratan Lal of Delhi University’s Hindu College, known for his scholarly rigor, debunked this "false propaganda" with historical evidence. He questioned why Dalit leaders like Mayawati, Chirag Paswan, Chandrashekhar, and Jitan Manjhi—who invoke Ambedkar’s name relentlessly—have stayed mute. "These leaders politicize his legacy for votes but won’t speak against this humiliation," he said.
Refuting Anand Swaroop’s claims, Prof. Ratan Lal cited precise references: "The Pandit offered no sources, but I will provide chapter, page, and volume numbers." He highlighted that in 1942, out of 1,076 ICS officers, only one was Dalit—the rest were either revolutionaries or "humble servants," a term Rau used for himself in a letter.
Quoting Ambedkar’s speech on November 25, 1949 (recorded in Govt. of India’s Volume 40, Page 41, Chapter 262), he noted Ambedkar’s acknowledgment of Rau’s drafting assistance while emphasizing the Constituent Assembly’s collective effort. Ra had submitted a rough draft of the constitution before the committee. "If Rau wrote 80% of the Constitution, as Manuvadis claim, where did the Hindu Code Bill come from? Did saints and RSS not burn his effigies for it?" Ratan Lal countered.
He underscored Ambedkar’s statist vision stating that Ambedkar's views were Pro-State and he deemed it essential and his philosophical defense of religion (unlike Communists who called it "opium"), urging Ambedkarite organizations and intellectuals to confront Brahmanical revisionism with facts.
The controversy has intensified on social media, with users slamming Rau’s glorification as illegal and insulting. As tensions escalate, the debate is poised to dominate political and social discourse in the coming days.
